Quel opérateur mobile choisir ?

Voila, la semaine prochaine je serais de retour en France, j’aurais rapidement besoin d’un nouveau mobile pour remplacer mon vieillissant Galaxy-S.

Aujourd’hui j’ai un forfait 2heures d’appel + Internet illimité (et quand je consomme trop, la vistesse est réduite) pour 20€ par mois.

Je cherche une offre équivalente - eg avec data illimitée , je suis prêt à m’engager 2 ans histoire d’avoir un téléphone assez potable - Je ne veux pas un iphone.

Qui peut me recommander un opérateur avec de bonnes offres ?

Very interesting read at http://waxy.org/2013/04/the_death_of_upcomingorg/. I’ve loved upcoming since the day I discovered it in 2008 via twitter. Since then I’ve been an avid user. I kind of stopped using it and haven’t really replaced it - eg I don’t use meetup so much, nor lanyrd , nor facebook - I use them but that’s 3 services (I also have last.fm - but don’t use it much either).

Work wise I’ve been very close to the Lightning project, with all the above, you realize that “calendaring” is HARD very hard. There’s technical issues with it (eg a least 3 or four standards), but the worse aspect of it are the human/social ones , privacy respect, how to do invites etc …..

That being said I would glady pay a little fee for something like upcom.in - eg something as nice as pinboard.in that replaced delicious.

Once more I’m reminded that for data - the cloud can’t be a solution.

Today the west northern part of the Netherlands , also know as Friesland is celebrating their language on twitter, by twitting in frissian and using the hashtag #frysk. Happy frissian day.

For those who don’t know Firefox, Thunderbird, Lightning and even FirefoxOS are available in the language. My good friend Wim maintains a blog about Mozilla products in frissian.

Pour tout un tas de raisons assez personnelles j’envisage de quitter les Pays-Bas et de revenir vivre en France. J’ai vraiment pas envie d’habiter en région parisienne et me coltiner 2 heures de transports par jour pour me rendre au travail. Le centralisme français rend Paris très attractifs. Donc il faut s’en éloigner le plus possible. Toulouse me semble un bon choix (mais je me goure peut-être).

Donc si tout se passe bien je vais avoir un petit mois pour trouver un point de chute du côté de Toulouse. J’ai rapidement demandé sur twitter. Obtenues quelques réponse mais pas vraiment ce que je recherchais. Donc je vais poser la question autrement :

Où ne faut-il pas habiter sur Toulouse et sa banlieu ? (à l’est, à l’ouest et pourquoi ?) Des recommandations en terme de villages, villes ?

And we are approaching our next major release (eg 24) - to give developers time to fix and find issues the project definitively needs more people using the beta version. If you want to give a hand just using it helps (make sure to send crash reports, send perf data if you feel like it). If anything looks wrong bugzilla is your friend for making bug reports.

Back in 1991, my dad replaced the aging Apple ][ with a brand and shiny new Macintosh LC. I had started hacking disks and memory using the nice call -151 on the Apple IIe - I was a geek and hooked.

Before the LC, the way I would acquire new software would be through friends and Dad , he’d bring new cracked games (CCB and others thank you). One day dad came back with a Mac version of Dark castle and I asked where it came from and his answer was ‘the network’. I was curious and wanted to know more. The year after I would spend a few hours a week using my dad’s computer to explore that thing called the network. I would go in a room with a terminal (can’t tell the type) that was connected to the university unix machines. I used emails to contact software authors. Discovered ftp and the umich archives. Created an account on the freenet to have my own email.

At that time I had an atari Falcon so I did atari related stuff. Started using Mosaic 1.0 and 2.0 on the mac or on windows 3.11 - still at my dad’s work. The main machine I was browsing the web with was running a 68030 running at 20 Mhz with a whopping 17 MB of Ram. In those days I was using, irc - email - newsgroups and a bit of web.

Then I went for some military duty.

After that I started studying again and became a fan of BeOS. Got myself a bebox and we had a crappy NetPositiv browser. I was using Macs, Unix and windows with Netscape installed on these. and most of the time N+ wasn’t doing the job. I started using mozilla at M8, trying to report bugs - thinking that fixing mozilla on Linux and windows (eg My work machines) would make a great browser on BeOS later.

I also started building web pages. In 2002 I started hacking on Opendarwin a little bit and discovered Chimera that became Camino. In 2003 version 0.7 had stalled for a long time and when Safari got released - and I liked Camino so much that I started annoying Mike Pinkerton on #developers to make things move. Started doing patch testing, patch writing (eg when an API change would break the tree) and getting involved. Later I switched to doing L10n cause I couldn’t build on my current systems. That led me to attend fosdem 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. I was there when Mozilla Turned 10.

In 2008 the project I was working for started to go wrong and I applied to mozilla messaging to work on Thunderbird. I got the job. Since then I’ve been trying to make the Internet (which is way more than the web) the open place I’ve always known it to be.

It’s been a fun ride. I like the fact that the web is browsable these days from any device any os, and I’m sure that this is due to mozilla. I’d resume mozilla with one picture :

Bugzilla Dashboard is awesome

If you haven’t tried that new feature in bugzilla do. The url looks like https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=mydashboard.html and you need to be logged in.

Thanks to the dashboard I’ve cleaned up a bunch of old cruffy bugs last week. Send a few emails around to clean more.

If you use bugzilla and the feature is available try it - you won’t be able to do without-it. It has small issues (like creating the list of all the bugs I’m cced on - but that list is probably HUGE).

Google reader is going away time to switch to Thunderbird

So it seems google will be shutting down one more free service, this time it’s the rss feed reader and the Caldv access to google calendars. While closing a free service that they probably couldn’t monetize is something I don’t mind much (also I wasn’t a big user of reader). it’s not the first time a free nice service closes (eg remember delicious ?). I’ve tried since the delicious issue to avoid free services for things I rely on. If I use a service that’s free, I need to be able to hack on it - so I can’t really depend on those web services. If my blogs go away - fine. If my videos go away I’m fine with that too.

I’m more concerned about the caldav going away, that locks some data to google services only and that’s pretty bad.

For those of you using rss and needing a replacement, I’m pretty sure you’ll find free services here and there - it’s not like reader was the only rss reader online. But if you think that the same story might happen with your new rss reading provider, maybe you could think about trying Thunderbird’s RSS reader :

It’s not the best RSS reader on the planet.
The UI is not ajaxy nor so sexy - but it does the job most of the time.
Best of all, the source is available and you can fix it, hack it.
Use extensions to make it better.
It’s maintained by Alta88 on his free time.

Now what you’ll need to do to switch from Google reader is to get the opml feeds from reader and import these into Thunderbird. The procedure to export the opml feeds is described here : http://googlesystem.blogspot.nl/2008/07/export-feeds-from-google-reader-folder.html.

To import in Thunderbird you’ll first need to add an RSS account , by File -> New -> Other acounts -> blog and news feed. This will create a nice blog and news account , which will be empty. click on it (eg the line in the column on the left with the rss icon) and then choose manage subscriptions. Then click import and choose the opml file created earlier. You’re done !

In the last 6 month I’ve been doing some long overdue management on my domain.

I’ve removed my blog software but not the content (and it’s ugly cause I forgot to copy some css files)
I’ve joined the ipv6 network
I’ve updated FreebSD from a 6.x to a more recent version
Ditch Apache web server cause I don’t need so many options
enabled Dkim for email (thru googleapps)
enabled xmpp for hirlimann.net
enabled dnssec

Some where quite easy (ipv6, dnssec, DKIM). Some more time consuming. But quite happy with these improvement to my domain and the internet in general.

Je suis passé en ipv6 l’année dernière un peut après le lancement du ipv6day en juin. J’ai mis mon serveur en ipv6, et depuis je tente d’obtenir ipv6 sur tous les services que j’utilise en ligne. Donc ticket de support, twitts etc … sans grand succès. Le problème majeur d’ipv6 aujourd’hui est un problème de poule et d’œuf. Si j’embête mon FAI pour avoir de l’ipv6 natif et ne plus passer par l’excellent sixxs, celui-ci me répond invariablement que le net est toujours majoritairement en ipv4.

Donc il faut plus de contenu , depuis la semaine dernière j’embête mes amis qui ont des sites web. Je regarde si le site est accessible en ipv6 via un traceroute6. Si ce n’est pas le cas, je regarde si l’opérateur propose de l’ipv6 - si c’est le cas je ping le propriétaire du site afin que celui-ci le propose en ipv6. En une semaine j’ai aidé à la mise en ligne de :

J’en ai demandé beaucoup plus - donc j’ai juste ajouté trois goutte d’eau - mais si tout le monde fait comme moi , ça finira par faire une rigole, puis un torrent, puis une rivière. Si toi aussi tu as un site web prend les 5 minutes qu’il faut pour le rendre accessible via ipv6 - car c’est l’avenir.

En rendant ton site ipv6 ready, tu le rend accessible dans le futur, tu permet aux opérateurs télécoms de débugé leurs équipements réseaux, et leur routes ipv6.

Dommage que flickr, tumblr, twitter ne soient pas accessible via ipv6.

Last summer I had a dns failure for a few days - results some emails bounced. I fixed it and everything’s been fine since. I have used meetup.com in the past, but I currently don’t use it.

Today I got the following email in my inbox :

We have been notified by your email provider that your email address (xxxx@xxx) is bouncing.  We have also noticed you have not visited Meetup for quite a while.

So If my email bounces why are they even trying to use it to contact me ? So being a bit suspicious I still followed the link and made sure I was on the right website before logging in. On the website I was greeted with the following :

We've been unable to get through to your email address or you have recently marked one of our emails as spam. This means you won't be able to receive notices and reminders about your Meetups. Our last attempted email was to:

Nice that 6 months later they try. I don’t understand how they think things will get fixed, but hey I’m not a project manager working for meetup.

Ma carte de débit fait un crédit à Carrefour :( ?

Donc mon compte chez ABNAmro, nl est pourvu d’une carte de débit Maestro. La semaine dernières j’ai fait le plein dans un supermarché carrefour en France et j’ai payé avec ladite carte.

Lorsque je fait le plein je note que la pompe m’indique que je suis limité à un maximum de 129€ (là je suis content de ne conduire qu’une voiture). Pour une fois je décide de demander le reçu. Le reçu indique 73 Euros. Rentré à la maison je consulte mes relevés bancaire et ho surprise 130€ ont été débité. Je vais donc à mon agence bancaire et quand je commence a expliquer la chose le réceptionniste m’indique que j’ai fait un plein d’essence et que la différence me sera remboursé d’ici à deux semaines.

Est-ce légal ? si oui comment est-ce possible ? Reçoit-on des intérêts sur le trop versé ?

Why I became a flickr user in 2006

Back in 2006 I had a flickr account , tried to use it and uploaded shots of a sword :

At the same time I was bloging a lot and was having fun managing my own server. So of course I ended up having Gallery installed and started using it. Soon I had to make a choice :

Maintain software
Make backups
Write extensions for maps etc …

Versus

Giving my pictures to a provider
paying a reasonable amount per year
Becoming “hostage” of the service

I chose the later because it also came with many of my colleagues - which meant comments, views and all those things that make sharing pictures so fun. Of course flickr is a bit different now - the quality of the pictures in general is a bit lower than on 500px and smugsmug, but that’s because flickr is used by normal people.

And I remember the first picture that made it to explore - that made my year , in terms of photography. Having a picture in explore is more than nice.
